Brief History of Naujan Academy

School Background

Brief History

After the war, intense need for educational establishment was felt in the whole Philippine archipelago. The same need propelled Mr. and Mrs. Atanacio Peña of Poblacion, Naujan to put up a secondary school. The Naujan Academy was founded on June 26, 1945. The coming of this institution was the start of a new hope and new beginning for the entire Naujeños. On July 1, 1951, Naujan Academy was granted her government recognition (#298, S. 19514)

In the early 1950’s the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) fathers started their mission work in Mindoro and the founders deemed it proper to transfer the ownership and management of the school to the SVD missionaries. Thus, in May 1952, Naujan Academy was turned over to the SVD’s. Since then, SVD fathers took turns in running the school, working hard to produce graduates who are assets of the community and witnessing Catholic Christians.

The institution started with only one building made of local materials as the formation center for learning. Postwar graduates were the educators at that time. Fr. Thomas Cassidy was the first SVD director of the school. He was followed by Fr. Martin Spang, Fr. Albert Cook, and Fr. Joseph Werner. The construction of additional buildings were done under the supervision and administration of the SVD fathers. Donations from concerned and generous people, both local and foreign, came in for the new buildings. Even tuition fees during those years were mostly subsidized by foreign donations.

At present, for more than 50 years in existence, Naujan Academy had been working for the attainment of its Vision and Mission – to produce graduates who are equipped with christian maturity and academic competence ready to face the realities of time and determined to be of service to church and country.

In 2004, the San Nicolas de Tolentino Pre-Elementary and Elementary School, a grade school established through the aid of an Non-Government Organization (NGO), managed and supervised by the Parish Pastoral Officers (PAPASCO) was merged to Naujan Academy

Although the present director of Naujan Academy is an SVD priest, the management and supervision of the school is slowly being transferred to Diocesan priests. In fact several Diocesan directors have served in the school in the past.
